Question
Where are some of the best places to study on-campus? And by best, I mean places where it's very quiet, there are minimum distractions, and you don't hear a lot of people coming in and out.

If you say library, can you be specific? Like what floor, room, etc.?

Thanks to anyone who responds!

Hickey Gym: Southern entrance, second floor, on the cabinets and desks stored in the hallway. (No Internet)

French tutor room (when unoccupied): 3rd floor, Sproul. (Has Internet)

Wellman basement, benches. (Has Internet)

Death Star: pick a corner, any corner. (No Internet)

Lower Level of the Library is really pretty quiet. Not a lot of people go down there if you go toward the back where the stacks are (not where the giant folios are) and they have some tables and some of those desks along one of the side walls. Fourth floor can be pretty quiet too. But the library does have a designated area called the 24Hour Study Room which is for students only and I hear it's really quiet there. The entrance is NOT the main library entrance. You have to get in through a different door, I think it faces the quad? It's sad I used to work at the library but I've never been in there in all my years at UCD so I'm not sure I remember where it is.

hope that helps? I'm not a quiet study person so that's all I know...

That study room is so uncomfortable though. I could never focus while sitting in there since it's so damn quiet except for the constant shuffling of papers and chairs.

Yeah complete silence like that does not suit me. I think it'd stress me out more haha. But I've never been in there. I don't think I missed out on anything but having worked at the library I feel like I should have gone down there at least once lol.

yeah it's on the side facing the quad. it's nice when there's not a lot of people in there, like on the weekends and late at night. the only bad thing is the entrance doors going in are SO HEAVY and they make a lot of noise when they close

they're like those doors that banks use to guard money (almost)

really? If there's not much people in the 24 hour study room perhaps it's not very loud but sometimes when it's jam packed people think it's ok to chat with their friend as if they're in a coffee house. argh >.

Thank you for your response. I have tried several of your suggestions, and I like the 24 hour study room the best, since it's right next to my classes. :)

The Science & Engineering library second floor is about as good as unrestricted spaces get.

There are private study rooms on the...3rd or 4th floor of Shields (I can't remember which) that are nice if you want complete quiet

I really like the Art lounge on the second floor of the MU, it can vary in quietness from kinda annoying talking/whispering to very quiet. Plus it's SUPER comfortable. But for the maximum amount of quiet I'd have to say the 24 hour study room. The fourth floor of the library (anywhere) is very quiet too, if you go up on the elevator and go straight, then past the individual chair/tables, there's a table kind of hidden next to the corrals that no one ever seems to be at.

i agree...the art lounge is usually pretty quiet and super comfy too! griffin lounge got rid of all those nice chairs and couches and now have hard yucky chairs. *sniff*

i still don't understand why they did that. a fireplace goes better with studying/reading than chatting. and i feel like there's a lot less people in griffin now and more in the art. PLUS plus sometimes griffin is closed for events! shouldn't they make king lounge extra comfy to make up for it or something??

i think they did that because all of the eating spaces for the coho got taken away for construction, so they were afraid ppl would bring food into griffin. i never go to griffin tho, so thats just a guess...

There was a time when someone would have pointed you toward http://daviswiki.org/Study_Spots and suggested that you compare this thread to that page and add any that were missing.

The experimental college. There's that lounge as well as the hallway with the couch. Depends what time of day but often that's fairly quiet.

And then there's the other library (health science?) that might have closed now (?)

The arboretum if you go the very end of it, only you can hear the highway traffic in the distance.

Sometimes you can find empty rooms that don't have classes going on next door, in buildings like Wellman or Olson, especially at night or on the weekend.

The basement of Shields, in the very back near the German books. Sometimes people come along and start doing group study at the table in that corner, though.

Fourth floor in the library (pretty much any desk next to a window) was always my favorite. Not many people come up there, but you still have nice pretty windows you can look out to see sunlight. Also, if the planets align correctly, you can sometimes catch a wireless signal.

not many people = linguistics majors

people always seem shocked when I'm actually looking for articles up there. . .
