WTF? Hate crimes at UCD.
1) UC Davis: Swastika carved into Jewish student's door probed as hate crime
http://www.news10.net/news/story.aspx?storyid=76212&catid=2

2) Also here at UCD: "On the night of February 26th the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center experienced acts of vandalism. The entrance to the LGBTRC was defaced with derogatory and hateful words that target the Queer community."

wait wait, FU, Cal Bears? Is this to mean Cal was responsible for this, or "Fuck you Cal Bears?"

I was confused by that, too. I thought it was meant to be "Fuck you, Cal Bears." Either way, I still don't know what the point of that was...

I read it along with the side to mean "Gays Go 2 Cal." I think the FU is separate. Either way, it's still kinda ridiculous that, assuming these people are college students, that they have been raised in time like this and still think shit like this is tolerable, never mind funny.

It actually says "Gays Go 2 Hell," but the picture cut it off. There's another picture floating around that shows the rest of that side. But yeah, you're right, it's completely ridiculous.

I agree with that, but I think it'd be different if someone from Cal was responsible for it than someone from Davis. Not that it makes it any better or less stupid, but if it was someone from Davis it'd be more internal shame rather than someone coming onto our campus and defacing our building. I guess I'm kind of hoping it was someone else, so that Davis doesn't get a bad rep and to be hopeful that it wasn't anybody I know or am in class with or the like.

either way, both these events happening around the same time is weird and sad.

There's a town hall meeting hosted by the LGBTRC about the event at the ARC ballroom today (Monday March 1) at 5:30 p.m. for anyone who is interested.

There's also supposed to be an anti-hate rally at the quad at noon.

I'm cool with getting the word out, but I sometimes think some of the loudest people on campus that talk about this are preaching to the choir.

This stance in defiance, this show of how we are unaffected: I actually am affected by it. I don't feel safe on campus anymore guys. I never did, but every time I hear about these things, I want to go hide and arm my self with my tazer.

So when people show this to me and tell me to go spread the word, and when everyone around me wears this as some kind of badge of defiance, all I see is the reminder that there are people that might one day come up behind me and kill me. It's comforting to know that people are in solidarity, but I hardly find that this will matter after I get lynched.

That's just me living in fear though.

This is currently being reported on by KTVU 10 o'clock news...interviews and whatnot on campus...

Good to see it's getting "big" media attention.

My parents were shocked. They asked me "Aren't college students supposed to be open minded?" I told them no, they're just like everybody else. Pretty sad.
