easy classes?
Okay. So I know this question has been asked of UCDLJ several times before, and I have in fact looked at the past posts.

But Im hoping, by asking it again some new, fresh information may come up.

My registration time is tomorrow and Im looking for a very easy course to give me a few more units so that I make minimum progress. I willing to do anything from 2-4 units, it just needs to be fairly easy and won't get in the way of my other much harder classes.

Any recommendations?

Personally, Im not fond of doing a lot of writing, so I would like to avoid classes that require a lot of essays, but I could be swayed if it were the right sort of subject.

Thanks!

i don't know what's being offered next fall (and am too lazy to look it up) but most upper div 4 unit Linguistics courses are easier and less work than some 1-2 unit freshman seminars I've seen (have you seen the course listings for some of those? yeesh! the correspondance of workload to units is ridic)

however, they usually require Lin 1 or Ant 4 (the anthro dept's version of Lin 1), which are also both usually pretty easy if you want to take those, and tend to have a term paper (usually instead of a final, though). also people either love or hate linguistics. which could be a problem.

I figure this will be semi-new info as most people usually just regurgitate lists of easy GEs and what not.

awww thanks for the info.

I just looked into LIN 1 and the lecture I could sign up for seems to be taught by a craptastic teacher (according to ratemyprofessor). The other lecture taught by the good professor sadly conflicts with my required classes as does ANT 4.

But I shall remember these classes for future use!

Raúl Aranovich.

Most of the better reviews of him on ratemyprofessor pretty much say "aww, he is a nice guy" which isnt really something I care about. I just want easy, and most of them mention his hw/tests are ticky and/or hard.

hahahahahahahaha Raulllllllll omg <3<3<3 (sorry he's my honors thesis advisor and yeah I spend more time with him than most of my friends)

I've had him for at least 2 upper div classes (my memory's going) and have always regarded him as the second easiest prof in the entire dept (fuck I literally got 100% in one of his classes), but my friend (fellow lin major) had him for Lin 1 and got a C (his worst grade in a lin class ever) which totally surprised me. but said friend also did well in his upper divs. so normally i'd say he's easy but maybe he's harder on the lin 1 students? kinda mysterious. i hear him talking about making up coursework for his lin 1 students all the time and i never remember anything particularly difficult. i know he's going on sabbatical after fall quarter so maybe he'll be more lax than normal, haha.

for the record, #1 easiest prof is Orhan, so if you can score him in the future, go for it.

yeah. I kinda gathered that as well from his ratemyporfessor page.

Almost all of his upper div classes had good ratings, but the majority of the LIN 1 ratings were not that great. I dunno. Its enough to convince me that perhaps I shouldn't take the class.

yeah no, better safe than sorry, i just find it interesting. . .i didn't have him for lin 1 (obv) so it's like a lin dept unsolved mystery, haha

heee yeah. It happens in my department (math) as well. Many of my upper div profs have terrible ratings for their lower div classes, but good ratings for the upper div classes.

They probably just care about their upper div classes more since that is where students who are more enthusiastic about the subject show up.

I think it has more to do with the fact that most of the people taking lower div classes that enjoy them don't care that much to review, where as those who take the class (like Lin 1) as a GE, realize they have no skill for it, and then get angry that they can't grasp the material like they would in a class similar to their major and then go rant about it on ratemyprofessor.

tl;dr- lower div classes have a higher percentage of non-major required students than upper div classes, thus throwing in a lot of people who don't have any passion or skill for the class into the equation.

well normally I'd agree, but like I said Jobu got a C in Raul's Lin 1, yet did fine in Morphology and Syntax Theory (almost did better than me since that's when the suspicious reader I got fired appeared), soooooo yeah.

I second FST 10. You don't have to buy the book, the lecture slides are posted online, and your grade is comprised of 3 midterms + 1 final -- but the worst grade is automatically dropped. You'd think it'd be best to take the three midterms and just skip the final, but the final is actually easiest of all of them because the questions are taken directly from the midterm questions (which are all posted online).

boring, but you just sit in class and you get an A. no homework. But, there is a paper that's one page double spaced
